Lecture

Trudy Gold
The Vatican and Escape Routes

Tuesday 15.06.2021

Summary

The focus of this lecture is on the wartime actions of Pope Pius XII and the operation of the “ratline” run by Bishop Alois Hudal out of the Vatican. The question arises as to whether religious leaders should be held to a higher moral standard than secular leaders. Highlighting Pius IX’s role in confronting rising liberalism and communism, which were antithetical to his conservative values, Trudy dives into the reactions of the Catholic Church during and after World War 11.

He was a diplomat. That is the point. He had to play the game.

“Hitler’s Pope: The Secret History of Pius XII” by John Cornwell. That one is very anti-pope. There are others that are more pro. In order to get a picture, you have to read three or four books.

I don’t know that. It would’ve been funnelled into the ratline, but that’s not the Catholic church. The money for the ratline to get the Nazis out came from Nazi gold, much of which was also in Switzerland.
