Summary

Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) is considered a key figure of Realism, which is characterized by a particular attitude towards subject matter and a focus on the real world. Realism was prominent in the French avant-garde from the 1840s to the 1880s. Coubert’s painting “The Artist’s Studio” is a central work of this movement. His manifesto-like statement accompanying the painting expressed his aim to create living art, record the manners and ideas of his age, and derive independence and individuality from a knowledge of tradition.

It could be. I would certainly go with that explanation because he’s clutching his little box and is depicted next to the priest. The depiction of the Jew is also the meaning of depiction of the priest.

He had a very big influence on early Pissarro. Pissarro’s work in 1860s, and less I would say on the others.

Yes, I think he was quite successful. He had a very wealthy patron in Monsieur Bruyas. But on the other hand, I don’t think he sold the big pictures as they still belonged to him when he died.
