Regency Portraitists: Lawrence and Raeburn
Summary
Regency portraiture is an art period marked by elegance, glamour, and romantic allure. While the era, from 1811 to 1820, is nostalgically viewed as a time of romance and charm, it also had its darker aspects, including the Napoleonic Wars, press gangs, slavery, and uncontrolled capitalism. The focus of the lecture is on two prominent artists: Sir Thomas Lawrence and Henry Raeburn. Both artists produced works that encompassed both Romantic and Classical elements.
Patrick Bade
Patrick Bade is a historian, writer, and broadcaster. He studied at UCL and the Courtauld Institute of Art. He was a senior lecturer at Christie’s Education for many years and has worked for the Art Fund, Royal Opera House, National Gallery, and V&A. He has published on 19th- and early 20th-century paintings and historical vocal recordings. His latest book is Music Wars: 1937–1945.
