Patrick Bade discusses cultural life in Italy during Mussolini’s regime, beginning with the March on Rome in 1922, led by Mussolini as an insurrection to suppress the democratically elected center-left government, until 1943 when the Allies invaded Italy. Patrick Bade is a historian, writer, and broadcaster. He studied at UCL and the Courtauld Institute of Art. He was a senior lecturer at Christie’s Education for many years and has worked for the Art Fund, Royal Opera House, National Gallery, and V&A. He has published on 19th- and early 20th-century paintings and historical vocal recordings. His latest book is Music Wars: 1937–1945.

Yes, to some extent it, but it wasn’t the style. You very rarely find that quick vibrato outside of Latin countries. Particularly in Italy but also Spanish singers and French singers.

There’s an overlap between the two and there there is actually real art deco in Italy. But a lot of the design in Italy has that element of classicism of looking back to the ancient world.
