Paris to Berlin: Refugee Songwriters
Summary
While there was a dark time in France during World War II that was marked with anti-Semitism, there were several refugee songwriters who fled to France prior to the war. This lecture focuses on five Berlin composers who fled to Paris in 1933 due to the Nazis’ intolerance of cabaret, an art form they associated with Jewish culture. Paris welcomed these composers, highlighting the two sides of France: one characterized by liberal values, the other marked by conservatism.
Patrick Bade
Patrick Bade is a historian, writer, and broadcaster. He studied at UCL and the Courtauld Institute of Art. He was a senior lecturer at Christie’s Education for many years and has worked for the Art Fund, Royal Opera House, National Gallery, and V&A. He has published on 19th- and early 20th-century paintings and historical vocal recordings. His latest book is Music Wars: 1937–1945.
