From Dreyfus to Vichy: The Crisis of Jewish Identity, Part 1

Monday 16.08.2021

Summary

Examining the period from the Dreyfus Affair to Vichy France, the lecture emphasizes the significance of exploring Jewish identity during this time. The evolving notions of Jewish identity, citizenship, loyalty, and the potential for pluralistic identity are discussed. The impact of the Dreyfus Affair on polarizing French society is noted, questioning the ironic portrayal of France as a heroic resistance force during World War II when only a small percentage participated in the Resistance.
