How to watch

This lecture starts on 29 June at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

After the Cold War and the political and military concept of MAD, few ever imagined that Russian and Eastern European Communism would simply crumble away like snow on a sunny day. Yet, that is what happened, and central to that collapse and an enduring icon of that moment in time was the fall of the Berlin Wall, which had symbolised for so long the deep divisions of the Cold War. “Bliss it was in that dawn to be alive,” wrote Wordsworth in an earlier age, but now we see that such optimism was misplaced.
