Summary
Once Britain had withdrawn from India in 1947, it was inevitable that the days of empire were drawing to a close. The starting pistol was fired in Africa when British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan made his famous winds of change speech in 1960 to the parliament of South Africa. The ending of imperial rule led to much bloodshed throughout the continent, not least when minority white governments seized power in South Africa and Southern Rhodesia.
