How to watch

This lecture starts on 16 February at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

The Spanish Civil War (1936–39) is often referred to as a rehearsal for World War II, as it posed democratic forces against fascist forces. It was, like all civil wars, full of atrocities. Both sides called upon external support. In Britain we remember the British volunteers of the International Brigade who fought for the republicans and Hitler’s fascist Germany, who tested the Luftwaffe in action.
