Summary
Tangier is the only Moroccan town without a mellah, yet its rich multicultural heritage lives on. Although initially subject to fluctuating conditions, from the 18th century onwards, Tangier’s mainly Sephardi community flourished. Jews were involved in all aspects of Tangier’s economic and social development whether in diplomacy, banking, or commerce, serving as intermediaries between Europeans and Moroccans. In the 20th century, Tangier was a safe haven for Jewish refugees and, subsequently, a magnet for bohemians and members of the Beat Generation.
