How to watch
This lecture starts on 23 October at 7:00pm (UK).
Summary
Superman. Batman. Captain America. These and other goyish chisel-jawed comics superheroes were created by good Jewish boys. In this talk, Yanky quotes what Stan Lee—Stanley Lieber, the most famous name in comics—was told: “Don’t worry trying to make the stories literate. Don’t strive for character development. Just give them a lot of action and don’t use too many words.” Yanky explores the Jewish and Messianic themes that infuse superhero stories, and suggests that comics creators deserve the same recognition as 2oth-century Jewish American literary giants like Roth and Bellow.
