How to watch
This lecture starts on 20 October at 5:00pm (UK).
Summary
The 19th-century invention of the steam engine and its dramatic effect on travel. Little had changed since the days of Rome, but with the advent of the steam railway engine and steamships, the world became smaller as armies and navies could move troops and ships faster than ever before. Additionally, these transport improvements deeply affected trade and commerce as well as leisure opportunities. The world had truly been moved on its axis.
