How to watch

This lecture starts on 30 June at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

1857 was a turning point for British India. It saw a mutiny by Indian sepoys, which came as a wake up call to the London government. Although quelled, the mutiny marked a change in Anglo-Indian relations and is seen today as the first step on the road to independence. At the time it marked the end of East India Company rule and the beginning of the Raj (British Imperial control).
