How to watch

This lecture starts on 29 June at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-98) was the mostly widely acclaimed artist of his time. He exercised a potent influence on the following two generations of artists, including Gauguin, Van Gogh, Seurat, the Nabis, and Picasso. Puvis de Chavannes never lost the respect of critics and art historians but his reputation was eclipsed. This talk attempts to explain what it was about his art that fascinated so many leading artists of early modernism and also the subsequent decline of his reputation.
