Summary

Edwina Mountbatten (1901-60), the last vicereine of India, was one of the most extraordinary figures of the 20th century. Granddaughter of Ernest Cassel, the German Jewish banker, and great granddaughter of the Christian Zionist Lord Shaftbury, she was born into rare privilege. She subsequently married into the British royal family, was a giddy socialite with a wild personal life, who later acquired a huge sense of duty.
