How to watch

This lecture starts on 23 June at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

This week’s talk centres on the complex and controversial figure of the British colonial administrator Warren Hastings (1732-1818), who was appointed the first governor general of Bengal in 1773 in an attempt by the London government to exercise some parliamentary scrutiny over the EIC. On his return to England, Hastings was impeached by Parliament in a trial that lasted seven years, only to be found not guilty of corruption at the end.
