William Tyler
Migrations from Scotland and Ireland

Monday 19.05.2025

How to watch

This lecture starts on 19 May at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

Migrations from the Scottish Highlands and Ireland to places across the empire, especially Canada and the US, were largely fueled by poverty; in Ireland’s case, a poverty that was made far worse by the Potato Famine. Political reasons also, naturally, played a significant part. In this lecture we examine this past and the consequences that continue to reverberate today.
