How to watch

This lecture starts on 5 May at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

This lecture examines Russian and American expansion in the 18th century. The reign of Catherine the Great saw the beginnings of the modern Russian Empire; that is the empire of the later Tsars, of the Soviets (especially after World War II), and the attempts of Putin to recover those lost “glory days,” as he sees it. While the newly born United States continued to build on its inherited British territories in the years following independence to create the America we know today.
