How to watch

This lecture starts on 10 February at 5:00pm (UK).

Summary

This presentation will cover the story of Japan’s invasion of China. The first invasion in 1931 saw Japan seize Chinese Manchuria, placing the former Chinese Emperor on its throne. In 1937 Japan invaded China “proper,” capturing Shanghai and Nanjing, the latter the scene of appalling Japanese atrocities. Whilst this war raged, an internal Chinese civil war was happening between Nationalists and Communists. Japan’s Chinese war only ended with the Japanese surrender in 1945 to the victorious Allies.
