Surrealism: Art for Our Time by Women Artists
How to watch
Summary
This lecture will unravel a theme highlighted in the previous week’s lecture about Tate St Ives, where an exhibition about the work of surrealist artist Ithell Colquhoun will be opening at the end of January 2025. Like many other creative women associated with the surrealist movement, Colquhoun’s work is now being recovered from obscurity and the margins of art history. There is a sense that, once again, surrealism feels urgent for our time of environmental and existential predicament. Works by surrealist artists who were women reveal creative strategies to navigate turbulent times. Additional artists who will be discussed include Meret Oppenheim, Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, Dorothea Tanning, Frida Kahlo, and Louise Bourgeois.
