William Tyler
‘Enemy’ Heroes and Villains: Napolean and Leopold of the Belgians

Monday 4.11.2024

Summary

Napoleon was a strange enemy for Britain, as his exploits in continental Europe and his charisma caused many Britons to both fear and admire him. To the French he was also a figure who divided opinion. Leopold II was by contrast a truly villainous figure for the horrors perpetrated in his name in the Congo Free State, which at the time was his private property. Leopold II’s administration is regarded then and now as arguably the worst example of European colonialism in Africa.
