Summary

This presentation examines how Turkey’s defense against an Allied invasion led to the perpetration of the first major genocide of modern times. In the ominous words of Rafael de Nogales, Venezuelan soldier of fortune and commander of the Ottoman forces in Armenia besieging Van in April–May 1915, “There is no mercy east of the Hellespont.”

David March studied history at Cambridge under Norman Stone in the late 1970s and taught modern Jewish history before becoming an infrastructure lawyer. He still practices law and is increasingly returning to a lifelong and passionate interest in modern history.
