The Ottoman Empire Transformed 1764 to 1918
Summary
We will look at how the Ottoman Empire rose to the challenges of the modern world with transformations in politics, culture, and technology contrary to contemporary perceptions of decline and defeat. This lecture is one of a series under the title of “The Wars of Ottoman Succession, 1918–2024,” explaining how so many of today’s conflicts have a common origin emerging from the end of the Ottoman Empire after the First World War.

David March studied history at Cambridge under Norman Stone in the late 1970s and taught modern Jewish history before becoming an infrastructure lawyer. He still practices law and is increasingly returning to a lifelong and passionate interest in modern history.
