Summary
If Eastern European Jews created the ‘dream factory’, it was the influx of talent from Central Europe that refined it, pushing the boundaries of censorship. The talented autocrat and filmmaker Otto Preminger tackled subjects like drug addiction in “The Man with the Golden Arm” and rape in “Anatomy of a Murder.” He produced and directed “Laura,” one of the greatest film noirs, for which he won an Academy Award. Preminger was an actor as well, playing the Nazi commandant in Wilder’s “Stalag 17.” Most notably, he brought “Exodus” to the silver screen, Hollywood’s tribute to Zionism.

Trudy Gold was the CEO of the London Jewish Cultural Centre and a founding member of the British delegation to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). Throughout her career she taught modern Jewish history at schools, universities, and to adult groups and ran seminars on Holocaust education in the UK, Eastern Europe, and China. She also led Jewish educational tours all over the world. Trudy was the educational director of the student resources “Understanding the Holocaust” and “Holocaust Explained” and the author of The Timechart History of Jewish Civilization.
