The Birth of Switzerland
Summary
Switzerland’s rugged and mountainous landscape, which previously deterred visitors, became an attraction to artists and writers such as J.M.W. Turner, Lord Byron, and Percy and Mary Shelley during the Romantic period. Schiller’s great historical play “Wilhelm Tell” inspired Rossini’s epoch-making grand opera of the same name.
