Summary

Following the demise of Oscar Hammerstein’s Manhattan Opera House in 1910, much of its talent fled to Chicago. With the infusion of these brilliant performers, the Chicago Civic Opera rivaled New York’s Metropolitan Opera until it was brought down by the impact of the 1929 financial crash, ultimately declaring bankruptcy in 1932.
