The Dark Side of Immigration: Exploitation
Summary
From the closing decades of the 19th century until the early years of the 20th century, nearly 3 million Jews fled westwards, escaping persecution and poverty in the Russian Empire. Many settled in North and South America - The Golden Medina. The initial influx of immigrants consisted mainly of single young men - approximately 50 men for every 1 woman. As a consequence, prostitution flourished and vulnerable young Jewish girls were exploited.
