Stanley Spencer: Eccentric Genius

Wednesday 5.07.2023

Summary

Visionary genius or oddball? How should we assess Stanley Spencer? Hailed for his powers of invention and his extraordinary draughtsmanship he continues to puzzle and disconcert us. The view of him as an “innocent eye” and a child-man who never grew up is complicated by his more than eccentric love life and erotic paintings that are so explicit that they are frequently censored on the internet.
