Sargent and Belle Epoque Portraiture

Wednesday 28.06.2023

Summary

In the Belle Epoque (c 1890-1914) John Singer Sargent was the go-to artist for wealthy clients who wanted to leave an enhanced image of themselves for posterity. However, they often got more than they bargained for and Sargent’s portraits could be too truthful for comfort. This lecture will examine Sargent’s portraits in the context of his period.
