The French Revolution eventually led to the political emancipation of Jews in France, the embrace of the concept of equality before the law, Napoleon’s destruction of European ghettos and his calling of the Sanhedrin. Napoleon was greeted by some Jewish communities in Europe as a hero. Set against this background, how did Jews in England react to doubts over their loyalty?
