Patrick Bade is a historian, writer, and broadcaster. He studied at UCL and the Courtauld Institute of Art. He was a senior lecturer at Christie’s Education for many years and has worked for the Art Fund, Royal Opera House, National Gallery, and V&A. He has published on 19th- and early 20th-century paintings and historical vocal recordings. His latest book is Music Wars: 1937–1945.

I think it was the poor exploited peasants. It always astonishes me. When you go into a village like Steinhausen, which was so poor. How they, you know, that they were willing to put so much money. I suppose again, it’s exploitation, but I think it’s more, it’s not colonies in this case, it’s more local exploitation.

Yeah, envy. I don’t know, I don’t think envy’s the right word. I think they’re intended to inspire joy as well. They’re very, very joyous buildings.
