Patrick Bade is a historian, writer, and broadcaster. He studied at UCL and the Courtauld Institute of Art. He was a senior lecturer at Christie’s Education for many years and has worked for the Art Fund, Royal Opera House, National Gallery, and V&A. He has published on 19th- and early 20th-century paintings and historical vocal recordings. His latest book is Music Wars: 1937–1945.

Yes he did. He had lots of children with his mistresses.

Neither Madame de Pompadour nor Madame du Barry were of aristocratic background. Although a lot of royal mistresses were, Madame de Pompadour was the daughter of a butcher, oddly considering her father was a butcher. Her maiden name was Poisson, which is fish.

Soft paste porcelain includes an element of glass and it’s less sharp than hard paste porcelain. And if you look at a figure made in soft paste porcelain, it does actually look softer.
